You have decided to remodel your kitchen or bath, but now what? If you are overwhelmed with all the design choices–then keep reading. By Design Cabinetry specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodels in Franklin, TN, Spring Hill, and the Middle TN area. We can help you with a custom kitchen remodel, as well as replacing cabinets and countertops in any room in your home! For now, here are some things to consider when choosing a design style for your kitchen or bathroom.

You may be asking yourself this question, but there is not a simple Yes/No answer. The answer to the question depends on how long you expect to be in your home.  If you are planning to sell your home in the near future, you will probably want to stay true to your home’s architectural style.

For example, if you have a Victorian or Tudor style home, prospective buyers will most likely be drawn to it for its style. Chances are a modern style kitchen would not appeal to them.  In that scenario, deviating too far from the original style of your home could cost you big time.

On the other hand, if your plans are to stay put, you can give yourself more freedom to mix your favorite styles or even create one of your own.  Combining design styles in an unexpected way creates more interest and shows off your personality.

Knowing a home’s style can be helpful if you are buying, selling, remodeling, or redecorating.  This picture shows some things to look at when trying to define the style of a home.

However, it isn’t always easy to pin down an exact style. You will want to look at more than one element rather than focusing only on the pitch of the roof or the symmetry of the windows.  To make it more difficult, newer homes tend to mix elements of more than one architectural style without belonging to one or the other. If you have done any research on the topic, you know there are too many architectural styles to name here. Instead of trying to list them all, I compiled a lineup of popular styles across the country and in the Nashville area.

Preserving the bond between your home’s architectural style and the furniture you fill it with not only stays true to the era in which it was built, but it will boost your home’s value. Now that you know- or at least have an idea of- the architectural style of your home, you can begin exploring the different design styles.  The five I have shown here will get you started.

While it’s respectable to stay committed to the original style of your home, it doesn’t hurt to infuse an opposite, yet harmonizing, design style inside your home. There are no fixed rules. This is your space and you should love how you feel when you are in it.

According to Houzz, a study of popular kitchen trends shows that contemporary styles are more popular in urban areas. While rural and suburban dwellers gravitate toward a transitional style.  The Transitional style is a blend of old and new styles. In essence, it can be exactly what you want it to be.

For example, if you have an Antebellum home, a Traditional interior style would work well. For a Transitional feel add modern pieces such as seating, lighting, or artwork for an unexpected charm. Remember that the Transitional style meshes traditional with modern, and it will be a brand all your own.

Designing an efficient home office isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Here are 7 tips for creating a productive space including how custom cabinets can help. 2020 has brought a wide variety of changes to the way we operate throughout our daily lives. One of the main changes is the amount of time many people are spending at home due to the closures of restaurants, retail stores, and more.

Another major difference is the frequency with which businesses are shifting their operations out of office buildings. Remote work has increased dramatically since early in the year. And even though cities are beginning to open back up, many workers have expressed a desire to continue working from home.

However, as many people have learned, there are benefits to utilizing certain measures of structure, even when working from home. Not all home offices are conducive to a productive workday.

7 Tips To A Productive Home Office With Custom Cabinets:

  • Identify a Purpose
  • Designate a Workspace
  • Give Yourself the Proper Tools
  • Consider the Aesthetics
  • Remove Distractions
  • Make It Comfortable, but Not Too Comfortable
  • Find Custom Cabinets for Secure Storage

Home offices with Custom Cabinets can serve many different purposes. Some people may need a fully-equipped office to meet with clients. Others might only need a studio or hobby room. And those with kids in school are going to need a place for them to study, or possibly even hold at-home, online lessons until schools are able to safely open back up.

And others might simply need a place to arrange their bills, plan a grocery list, or catch up on social media. Recognizing the purpose of your home office will guide the rest of your decisions.

Identify an area in your home to be used as an office. Dedicate this space to work. A spare room can be outfitted to satisfy all the necessary needs for a productive workspace. However, not everybody has adequate space to set aside a complete room to act as a dedicated office.

That’s okay. Creating a workspace in your home is easier than you might think.

First, think of any unused space in your home, or a space that can serve a dual purpose. For example, a guest bedroom can double as a home office during the day.

A desk in the corner of a room can be outfitted with the essentials.

Every home office has four basic necessities:

  1. Desk
  2. Chair
  3. Storage
  4. Light

These four components will provide everything you need to focus on the task at hand. This list, however, can be expanded to fit your particular workload. For example, do you need to take a lot of notes? Give yourself a box of pens and multiple notepads.

Custom cabinets can be tailored to your particular workspace and storage to ensure you stay organized. Remember, this area essentially needs to be separated from the rest of the house. This means you should keep all of your work documents, tools, and necessities in a singular location.

We work better in pleasant areas. It might be tempting to set a desk up in a closet if it’s your only solitary area, but it won’t create an enjoyable work environment.

Take the time to make your home office nice. Add a plant. Try to set your area up near a source of natural light. Don’t surround yourself with harsh colors.

A good-looking area sets our brains at ease and makes it easier to focus on our work.

Part of designating an area as your home office means getting rid of anything that will get in the way of productivity.

Either set your office up in an area that doesn’t have access to a television or remove an adjacent TV.

Try to find an area with a door that can be closed, or tell housemates not to disturb you while you work.

If you don’t need your phone for work, place it out of reach to avoid being tempted to check it.

Spending a lot of time in an uncomfortable chair can lead to some very real health issues. Be sure your back is supported and you keep proper posture.

Working from home might seem like a great opportunity to stay in bed all day while trying to work on your computer. However, being too comfortable can take your attention away from your work.

Dedicating an area of your house to work allows you to focus on remaining equally efficient — if not more efficient — when compared to being in the office.

The ideal home office temperature is also important to productivity. A difference of just a few degrees on the thermostat can have a significant impact on how focused you are. Therefore, it’s helpful to ensure your HVAC system makes your home office as comfortable as your old office.

Custom Cabinets in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN at BDC for home offices.

Outfitting an area of your home for a new purpose can be difficult. The essential elements of an efficient home office don’t always fit where you’d like them to go. However, custom cabinets can be a huge asset in creating a productive work environment.

We can’t be sure when things will get back to normal, if ever. Custom cabinets can be the difference between simply getting by until the office opens back up, and putting out quality work at home.

Whether you are planning a custom kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, or a new home office, By Design Cabinetry has you covered! We proudly serve Franklin, TN, Spring Hill, Columbia, Cool Springs, Brentwood, and Nashville, TN.

If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen or updating your kitchen cabinets, you have, no doubt, asked these questions:

  • What is the most popular kitchen cabinet door style?
  • What is the most popular kitchen cabinet color?

If you’re freshening up your kitchen, the cabinets are a great, fairly inexpensive way to transform your space. Whether gut renovating a new house or updating an apartment kitchen, here is a breakdown of popular kitchen cabinet styles and colors.

You cannot go wrong with the white shaker door. It is a timeless classic for good reason. Crisp, white cabinets will instantly brighten up a room. You may be amazed at how much bigger and brighter your kitchen feels! The clean lines and understated design of the shaker door brings harmony to any style of kitchen whether it’s traditional, contemporary, or somewhere in between.

The Shaker door is named after the religious movement of the American Colonial Era in the 1770’s.
The simple yet functional design replicates the furniture made by the Shakers– who were extremely skilled craftsmen.

The construction of the door consists of five pieces: four rails and a recessed panel. With two options for the drawer, you may choose the five-piece drawer front, which matches the door, for a traditional look. To add a modern touch, the slab drawer front is the way to go. However, not all shaker doors are alike.

For a touch of personality, you may want to consider the beadboard panel, while a decorative trim balances the simplistic design with a bit of elegance.

Think of white cabinets as a ‘blank canvas’. Your color options will be endless. Better Homes & Gardens suggest using neutral tones for the foundation elements in your kitchen like the cabinets, countertops, flooring, and appliances. Introduce other accent colors on things like walls, back splashes, window treatments, and lighting. That way, you won’t break the bank when you are ready to change the color scheme of your kitchen.

kitchen cabinets white shaker grey modern, find kitchen cabinets in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN at BDC for a kitchen remodel you will love!

Although white is among the top trending colors for kitchen cabinets, you might want to ‘shake’ things up a bit. Other trends involving white cabinets include white with dark (paint or stain) and white with grey. Mixing white cabinets with another color offers a stunning visual effect. It is also the perfect opportunity to highlight a focal point of your kitchen, such as an island or a specialty cabinet.

A new year usually means resolutions for a brand new you. It may also bring a list of home projects to be checked off the to-do list. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone as nearly 8 in 10 homeowners plan on completing a home renovation project in the next two years. Lifestyle changes such as growing families, children moving out, or accommodating needs due to aging or disabilities are generating the need to remodel. Other motivating factors that drive remodeling activity include increasing property value and optimizing functionality of an existing space, according to a survey by Hausera, a kitchen and bath specialty retailer. Whatever reason finds you in the market to remodel, here is what’s happening in 2020.

A majority of kitchen remodels are trending toward the transitional, contemporary or modern styles. According to the American Institute of Architects, high-tech features like, wireless sound systems, and home-automated security systems are rising in demand. Smart products like fridges with touchscreen technology or Wi-Fi enabled ranges are upgrades that are gaining popularity. Homeowners also desire green products like energy efficient lighting or water saving dishwashers. Large kitchen islands will continue to be a prominent feature in kitchen remodels this year. Matte black, bronzes, golds, and coppers are new hardware finishes that will retain their popularity. In new and remodeled homes there is a rising demand for special function rooms such as in-law suites, home offices, mud rooms, and outdoor living spaces.

According to economists, remodeling expenditures have increased each year since 2012. The Residential Remodeling Index (RRI) is a value that indicates the national level of remodeling activity. It is measured by monitoring economic conditions known to influence the industry. The index reached a new high of 117.5 in the first quarter of 2019, an increase of 0.7% from the fourth quarter of 2018. Projections for 2020 show that a gain of 2.3% can be expected. This is evidence that more and more homeowners are staying in their homes and upgrading.

Whether you are in your forever home or you plan to sell in the near future, it’s smart to know which home remodel projects will bring a higher return on your investment. Here are some of the projects from the 2019 Cost vs. Value Report for the south east region.

    • Exterior upgrades – ROI: 52- 132% – These include upgrades of garage doors, siding, windows, decks and roofing.
    • Kitchen remodel– ROI: 51- 58% – Depending on whether you are upgrading with mid-range or high-end products and finishes, you can expect to recoup around 50- 60%.This type of remodel includes features such as semi-custom to custom cabinetry, an island, stone or quartz countertops, energy efficient appliances, lighting and flooring.
  • Bathroom Remodel– ROI: 49% – Options for this type of remodel might include relocating plumbing fixtures, tiled shower with frameless glass enclosure, soaker tub, cabinets, stone countertops, lighting and heated flooring.

  • Master Suite addition – ROI: 40% – With this project, expect features like a sleeping area, sitting area, bookcases or built-ins, fireplace, master bath, walk-in closet, walk-in shower with stone walls/floor, custom frameless glass enclosure, custom vanities with stone countertops, in-floor heating and lighting.

The bottom line is that remodeling not only adds beauty and function to your home, it adds value.

Have you ever considered creating custom furniture pieces using cabinets? Most of us think of cabinets as boxes that are permanently fixed to the wall in our kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. Today we can do so much more with these ‘boxes’. In this blog, I will share some reasons you might want to consider using cabinets to create furniture-style pieces. For more information on creating custom furniture pieces with cabinets in Franklin, TN, Spring Hill, TN and surrounding areas of Middle, TN, contact By Design Cabinetry, today!

Let Us Count the Reasons

You may be asking what is the benefit of using cabinets to create furniture pieces? For one thing, you will have more finish options to match the cabinets in your home. In addition to the paint, stain, and glaze choices for cabinets, distressing options are also available such as softened corners, rub through, or worm holing.
Bathroom cabinets, custom cabinets in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN, custom bathroom remodel and cabinets at By Design Cabinetry.

These matching linen cabinets offer symmetry and much-needed storage cabinets in the bathroom, preventing a full bathroom remodel.

The bun feet of the cabinets coordinate with the shape of the legs on the sink.

Pairing the distressed finish of the cabinets and the old-fashioned style of the floor tile adds character to this space.

Statement Pieces

Instead of matching your cabinets, you may want a statement piece such as an armoire, china hutch or wine bar. This wine bar features glass doors, flush toe kicks, and crown mold. Glass doors are a versatile feature with options from clear, to frosted, and even textured. They will make the space seem larger, and if you use lighting inside the cabinets, the space will be brighter. Notice how the lights behind these frosted glass doors bring warmth to the room.

The china hutch shown below was created with wall cabinets that are varied height and depths. Visually this gives the appearance of a freestanding piece of furniture.

Adding crown mold to any piece offers detail with a high-end look.

Custom Cabinets for a Custom Fit

You are also more likely to get exactly the size you need when creating a desk or bookcase, for example. Plus you will have a piece that looks like fine furniture while having the advantages of cabinetry such as pull out trays.

A Leg Up

Time for some fancy footwork! Let’s look at the options for base cabinets that help create the look of furniture. Furniture Feet options are available for base cabinets. I’ve shown two of them below. The Tapered Foot carries on the clean lines of the cabinet doors. On the other hand (or should I say, foot), The Pedestal Corner Foot offers a more whimsical feel.

In case toe kick options are new to you, let me explain. A cabinet’s toe kick is the recessed space at the bottom of a base cabinet. It allows your foot to rest underneath the cabinet when you are standing in front of it. This is great for task oriented areas in kitchens or at vanities. However when you want your cabinets to look and feel like furniture, the flush or valence toe kicks are better options.

Flushed, finish and valence options, cabinets in Franklin, TN, kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets and more at By Design Cabinetry.

The flush toe kick goes straight to the floor with a place for molding to be attached. The Valence option has a specially cut space at the base of the cabinet that opens it up, allowing you to stand comfortably in front of the cabinet. The flush toe kick and the base molding gives this kitchen island a solid look while the bookcase offers a deliberate, built-in look. Notice the cabinets on the opposite wall. They have the recessed toe kick.

Turned posts can be decorative as in the picture of the kitchen sink base below. Not only do the posts create a focal point, but they give the sink base a custom look. Turned posts, also referred to as legs, can extend the workspace of a kitchen island giving it the appearance and function of a table.

MCC offers some great online tools to help visualize their product lines.  If you need inspiration, I suggest browsing through their Idea Book.  I did, and every page was my new favorite! Another tool that I found helpful is the Cabinet Designer. This lets you choose wood species, door style, and color. It’s helpful to see how your preferred finish will look on the wood species you have chosen. My suggestion is to complete steps 3, 2, 1, and then go to step 4 for the results.  That way, only the color options that are available for the door style and wood species you have chosen will show on the list.  Below is an example of my results when comparing the same finish on two different door styles.

Not only is cabinet hardware stylish; it has a function.  It protects the finish on your cabinets from chipping and smudging caused by daily wear-and-tear of opening and closing doors and drawers. Just think of the grimy build-up from bare hands repeatedly touching the cabinets in the same place. Who wants that?

The cabinet hardware you choose will determine the overall style of the kitchen- or help offer a contrasting style if you are going for a more transitional feel. Changing the hardware can dramatically change the look of the cabinets much like changing your jewelry and accessories can change the style of your outfit.

You can see in the pictures below how different hardware gives a different feel to the same cabinet door style.  Cup pulls are at home in a country or cottage style kitchen. In contrast, the slim lines of the contemporary pulls complete the look of the modern or transitional kitchen.

Thorston Restoration & Construction

Key Grande

Ready or not, brass is back! Its rise in popularity, in part, may be due to the fact that it’s been out of style for about the last twenty years; and now it seems new again.  On the other hand, it may have something to do with the reality that dark colored cabinets like grey, navy blue, and black have started trending. Brass hardware pairs well with the darker cabinets giving them an unexpected pop of color.  The warmth of the gold tone brass finish also brings a subtle yet stunning visual effect.

A good rule of thumb used to be to match the finish of your kitchen hardware to your faucet’s finish. That’s a thing of the past. If you are feeling adventurous, try creating a blended space by mixing metals. In the pictures below, the combination of more than one metal adds warmth to the cool, white, monochromatic kitchens and keep them from looking and feeling clinical.

Hardware is all about style and function. While it’s important to choose a hardware style you like, you also need to select a piece that fits your hand comfortably. Also, consider the distance between the cabinet surface and where your hand will be gripping the hardware. If the piece is too small for your hand, not only will you have difficulty opening the door or drawer, but the cabinet finish will begin to chip or fade where your hand touches it.  In addition, make sure there is ample room to install the piece you have chosen. For example, a cup pull may not fit on a five-piece drawer head like the one pictured here.

When replacing cabinet hardware, most people opt to use the existing holes. Otherwise, you will need to fill and refinish your cabinets first. There are two measurements available to you when purchasing hardware.  The overall length and the measurement (in millimeters) between the two holes will be displayed. The most popular sizes are 96 and 128 mm.

Planning a kitchen remodel in Franklin, TN, Spring Hill or surrounding areas of Middle TN? Building a new home? Here’s your chance to choose the kitchen layout that best suits you and your family. The kitchen is the most important room in the house. I suppose that’s why they call it the heart of the home. It’s no wonder that so much time and thought goes into making choices for your dream kitchen. After all, you want it to be everything you envisioned it would be. In this blog, I want to breakdown some of the most popular kitchen layouts and offer some helpful information you may not have considered before.

The Galley Kitchen, also called Corridor or Walk Through, consists of two walls facing each other. Usually, the sink is on one wall and the range is on the other.

This layout maximizes space and keeps everything easily within reach, and works best as a one cook kitchen. It typically is separated from the rest of the house.

Galley kitchen, kitchen remodel in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN, custom cabinets, kitchen cabinets and custom kitchen remodel- By Design Cabinetry.

The L Shaped Kitchen offers more privacy since it keeps traffic out of the kitchen. This style consists of two adjoining walls with the sink or range on the main wall and a shorter run to create the L-configuration. If you have more than 15 feet to use on the long run of cabinets, you may want to consider a different layout that will make better use of the space.

L shape kitchen layout, kitchen remodel in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN, custom cabinets, kitchen cabinets and custom kitchen remodel- By Design Cabinetry.

The U Shaped, or Horseshoe, Kitchen consists of three walls of cabinets. This layout works best if there is at least 10 feet of space between the two opposite walls. This style can easily accommodate more than one cook since there will be plenty of workspace.

U shape layout, kitchen remodel in Franklin, TN and Spring Hill, TN, kitchen cabinets, custom cabinets and custom kitchen remodel- By Design Cabinetry.

Kitchens with islands offer more workspace, storage, and seating. In addition, islands can be used to turn an L-shape layout into a U-shape or a One Wall Kitchen into a Galley. For all of their function, islands won’t work in every kitchen. There must be ample room to walk around the island. There also needs to be enough room for all cabinet/appliance doors to open on the island as well as on kitchen perimeter.

Kitchen with island, kitchen remodel in Spring Hill, TN and Franklin, TN, kitchen cabinets, custom cabinets and custom kitchen remodel- By Design Cabinetry.

Peninsulas are much like islands, with two main differences. They are attached and they don’t take up as much space. Peninsulas can turn an L-shape layout into a U-shape or a U-shape into a G-shape.

The following measurements were taken from the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) website. These guidelines are all about ease of motion and function. Most importantly, they help keep you and your family safe. For a more detailed list, click here.

Doors and Interference

A doorway should be at least 32 inches wide. A door shouldn’t interfere with a cabinet/appliance door, nor should cabinet/appliance doors interfere with each other. Make sure to give special attention to the doors at corners. Also, in a Galley style kitchen, you will need enough space for doors to open on opposite sides without interfering with one another.

Walkways and Work Aisles

You will need at least 36 inches for walkways. Work Aisles require 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for two cooks. This gives space to maneuver around open doors, and each other, while working.

Working Triangle

The Work Triangle consists of three primary work centers: cooking, cleanup/prep, and refrigeration. The placement of these work stations in relation to the others will determine the efficiency of your kitchen. Also, keep in mind that each leg of the triangle should remain between 4-9 feet. If possible, make sure no major traffic patterns cross through this triangle.

Traffic Clearance at Seating

If no traffic needs to pass behind the seating area, allow at least 32 inches from the edge of the table or counter to the wall or any other obstruction. On the other hand, if traffic does pass behind the seating area, allow 36-44 inches to pass.

Landing Spaces

For function and ease, you will want to have 24 inches of countertop space on one side of the sink and at least 18 inches on the other. Give yourself at least 15 inches on either side of the refrigerator as a landing space. It is also acceptable to have a landing surface no more than 48 inches across from the refrigerator. Safety is the priority of the following specifications. There should be 12 inches on one side and 15 inches on the other side of a cooktop. Add a minimum of 9 inches behind cooktops that are in islands or peninsulas. You will need 15 inches above, below, or adjacent to the handle side (when closed) of a microwave. Ovens require 15 inches on either side or above for adequate landing space.Instead, if you have a landing space that is not more than 48 inches across from the oven, that is acceptable as long as it doesn’t open into a walkway.

We all want our home to reflect our individual personality. Waypoint offers tools so homeowners can find a style that is uniquely their own. When it comes to doors for your cabinetry, there are three things to consider: style, finish, and wood species.  First, choose from the raised panel, flat panel, or the slab door style. Now select from these available finishes: paint, paint with glaze, stain, stain with glaze, or thermofoil.  Then, select cherry, maple, or oak wood for your cabinets.

Waypoint cabinets are made in America. Each cabinet is constructed of 1/2” thick plywood sides; 1/2” thick top, bottom, and floors; and a 1/8” thick back. All drawers feature a dovetail joint which gains its strength from the interlocking parts. Full extension drawers pull all the way out so you can easily access items in the back of the drawer. Soft-close doors and drawers are a standard feature on all Waypoint cabinets.

As the name suggests, these are no ordinary pieces.  Along with the WOW factor, they are also packed with functionality. Single and Double Oven Cabinets give a nice, built-in look, while Appliance Garages are the perfect way to get rid of clutter on your countertops. Wine Storage Cabinets are extremely versatile. Use them in the kitchen for storing (you guessed it) wine bottles, but don’t stop there. Organize towels in the bathroom, or sort clothes and shoes in a kid’s room. Add storage space and increase function with pull outs. Pull out trays bring items in your base cabinets to you. Isn’t that better than getting on your hands and knees to reach the back of your cabinet? Try wall or base unit pull-outs to keep small items handy or stash baking sheets in one strategic place. Storage cubes add charm, and pose an unexpected opportunity for organization. It would be a shame to talk about specialty cabinets without mentioning the popular Lazy Susan Base Corner Cabinet. Keep essential items at your fingertips with the two-tier rotating carousel. Try some out-of-the-box thinking by modifying key pieces in your kitchen, bathroom, or any room you are updating or remodeling. Some of these options include increased/reduced depth, matching interior, furniture ends, and all plywood construction.

Are you thinking of taking on a remodeling project in your home? Here are 5 tips that can get you headed in the right direction and let you know what to expect.

Show and Tell

I’m sure you didn’t decide to remodel your kitchen or bathroom on an impulse. It is something you have thought about—a lot. You have a vision for this space, and chances are you have ideas and pictures galore! Be prepared to share this vision and provide as many details as possible. Here are just a few of the things your designer will want to know:

• Are you right or left handed?

• How frequently do you cook?

• What are your likes/ dislikes about your current kitchen?

• How do you need this space to function?

Crunch the Numbers

It’s important to stay on budget, but just as important is setting a realistic budget. In his article “Here’s the Right Amount to Spend on a Home Renovation”, Josh Garskof cites a breakdown of home renovation costs by the value of each room as a percentage of your home’s total value. Using this rule of thumb, a kitchen remodel should cost between 10- 15% of a home’s value. For a master bathroom remodel, you should expect to spend 10%, while a powder room/bathroom should cost 5%. Naturally, you will be willing to spend more on the things that are important to you. Your likes or must-haves will determine where you are willing to spend more of your budget. For example, if you are planning to be in your home for at least 10 more years, a product with a better warranty might appeal to you even if it costs a little more. Doing some of the work yourself can help stretch your budget. If you are a DIYer (I know you’re out there!), you may feel up to the task of doing the tear out, painting, or installing the back splash. The money you save on labor might allow you to have everything on your wish list and stay on budget.

Are We There Yet?

This remodel project didn’t just start for you. It started when you created that Pinterest Board or Houzz Idea Book. You already have serious time invested in this, and you were ready for this to be done—yesterday! I get that, and I feel your pain. Depending on the amount of work to be done, you might expect a complete kitchen remodel to take four to six weeks, after the designing and ordering part of the process. Make sure your timeline expectation is proportionate to the size of the job. Ask your designer/contractor specific questions about the time requirements since they will be able to give you a good estimation. If you are doing any of the work yourself, you can help stay on schedule by having your part finished by the time the installers/subcontractors are scheduled to start work on your project.

Expect the Unexpected

Remember to be flexible. During a bathroom or kitchen remodel, sometimes things happen that are out of your contractor’s control. Shipping delays or inclement weather can wreak havoc on work schedules. Speaking of the unexpected, we can’t rule out the possibility of unknown issues being discovered during the project. How to deal with these contingencies should be addressed before the project begins. Any reputable contractor will deal with these setbacks as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Do Your Part

Even if you are not a DIYer, there are things you can do to help the installation/construction part of the process. Plan to be home (or at least in town) when the work is scheduled to begin. Anything on your calendar that might conflict with your renovation will need to be addressed when the timeline is being discussed. Make sure you have a place where your ordered materials can be safely stored until the installation begins. Consider covering the floors if possible. It may also be necessary to move furniture to clear pathways and give plenty of workspace. Keeping pets and children out of the area being remodeled is crucial to safety. These steps can help prevent damages and injuries.
