For now, here are some things to consider when choosing a design style for your kitchen or bathroom.
DOES THE INTERIOR OF MY HOME NEED TO MATCH THE EXTERIOR?
You may be asking yourself this question, but there is not a simple Yes/No answer. The answer to the question depends on how long you expect to be in your home. If you are planning to sell your home in the near future, you will probably want to stay true to your home’s architectural style.
For example, if you have a Victorian or Tudor style home, prospective buyers will most likely be drawn to it for its style. Chances are a modern style kitchen would not appeal to them. In that scenario, deviating too far from the original style of your home could cost you big time.
On the other hand, if your plans are to stay put, you can give yourself more freedom to mix your favorite styles or even create one of your own. Combining design styles in an unexpected way creates more interest and shows off your personality.
HOW CAN I DETERMINE MY HOME’S STYLE?
Knowing a home’s style can be helpful if you are buying, selling, remodeling, or redecorating. This picture shows some things to look at when trying to define the style of a home.

However, it isn’t always easy to pin down an exact style. You will want to look at more than one element rather than focusing only on the pitch of the roof or the symmetry of the windows. To make it more difficult, newer homes tend to mix elements of more than one architectural style without belonging to one or the other. If you have done any research on the topic, you know there are too many architectural styles to name here. Instead of trying to list them all, I compiled a lineup of popular styles across the country and in the Nashville area.

HOW DO I CHOOSE AN INTERIOR STYLE?
Preserving the bond between your home’s architectural style and the furniture you fill it with not only stays true to the era in which it was built, but it will boost your home’s value. Now that you know- or at least have an idea of- the architectural style of your home, you can begin exploring the different design styles. The five I have shown here will get you started.

While it’s respectable to stay committed to the original style of your home, it doesn’t hurt to infuse an opposite, yet harmonizing, design style inside your home. There are no fixed rules. This is your space and you should love how you feel when you are in it.
According to Houzz, a study of popular kitchen trends shows that contemporary styles are more popular in urban areas. While rural and suburban dwellers gravitate toward a transitional style. The Transitional style is a blend of old and new styles. In essence, it can be exactly what you want it to be.
For example, if you have an Antebellum home, a Traditional interior style would work well. For a Transitional feel add modern pieces such as seating, lighting, or artwork for an unexpected charm. Remember that the Transitional style meshes traditional with modern, and it will be a brand all your own.
Examples of design styles that will blend nicely:
COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE & CRAFTSMAN
GREEK REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE & TRADITIONAL
TUDOR REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE & OLD WORLD
PRAIRIE ARCHITECTURE & MODERN
